Origin
Campari is an F1 hybrid bred by the Dutch company Enza Zaden (Enkhuizen, Netherlands). Grower Ton Janssen first tested it on a small scale in 1994; together with partners he negotiated exclusive northwest European cultivation rights with Enza Zaden and formed the growers' association Frutanova in 1995, which markets it in the Netherlands and Germany as 'Tasty Tom'. It is the cocktail tomato most shoppers have eaten without knowing the name, sold on the vine in supermarket clamshells, and seed for home growing has historically been harder to obtain than the fruit itself.
