How to choose

  1. Start by matching habit to container size. Micro dwarfs like Micro Tom and Orange Hat live happily in 2 to 4 litres on a windowsill. Dwarfs like New Big Dwarf need a proper 15 to 20 litre pot on a balcony. The determinate varieties, including Roma and Rio Grande, are the largest plants here and want the biggest containers, but they finish and free the space.

  2. Watering is the real constraint and it is not negotiable. A container tomato in summer may need water twice a day, and inconsistency shows up as blossom end rot faster in a pot than in the ground, because there is no soil reservoir to buffer the swing. If daily watering is not realistic, choose a larger pot rather than a different variety.

  3. Decide whether you want a harvest or a season. Can I grow an indeterminate tomato in a container?

How big does the pot need to be?

Why do my container tomatoes get black bottoms?
