Origin
Pineapple is one of the large bicolour beefsteaks, with yellow flesh marbled by red streaks that radiate from the centre; the pink deepens as the fruit ripens and the flavour is best while gold still dominates. It came to gardeners through Gleckler Seedmen, who listed unusual tomatoes from the 1950s onward, and by 2004 had over forty commercial sources. The flavour is markedly low in acid and often described as fruity, which makes it a favourite for sliced presentation and a poor choice for canning, where acidity matters. Fruit are often irregular, sometimes heart-shaped on the same plant, and crack readily in wet weather.
